About Us

On the last Saturday of the month, something reliable happens at 281 Chestnut St: the smell of bacon and fresh coffee drifts down the block before the doors even open. The monthly hot breakfast at Union Elks Lodge #1583 has become a small institution in its own right, drawing members and guests for eggs cooked to order, cheese omelets, sausage, French toast, and enough rye bread to keep a deli honest. It is the kind of morning that reminds you what a neighborhood organization is actually for.

Beyond the breakfast table, Lodge #1583 serves Union, NJ as a full-service civic anchor. The hall itself is genuinely spacious, the kind of room that can host a church fundraiser for 100 guests without anyone feeling squeezed. Members have used it for anniversaries, community celebrations, and charity drives, and the lodge's connection to the national Elks.org charitable network means that money raised here goes somewhere real.

The lodge carries the traditions of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, an organization chartered in 1868 to support veterans, fund scholarships, and strengthen local communities. Membership opens the door to that mission, to a social calendar, and to a hall that feels genuinely lived-in rather than rented by the hour.

What We Offer

The lodge's event hall is its most visible offering, and the reviews back it up: 100-plus guests fit comfortably, the acoustics work for a DJ, and the kitchen produces food that people actually compliment afterward. If you are planning a church gathering, a milestone birthday, a retirement party, or a community awards night, this space deserves a serious look before you sign anything with a hotel banquet room.

Membership in Elks Lodge #1583 comes with more than a membership card. You get access to the monthly breakfast, invitations to lodge social events, eligibility for Elks national scholarship programs, and the quiet satisfaction of belonging to an organization that has funded veterans' services and youth programs for over 150 years. New members are welcomed through a straightforward application process connected to the national BPOE network.

The lodge also supports the broader Union, NJ community through charitable initiatives, holiday drives, and partnerships with local veterans' groups. Whether you want to rent the hall for a private event or explore full membership, the lodge is worth a conversation.

"Union Elks Lodge offers a hot breakfast once a month. Eggs any way, cheese or ham & cheese omelets, potatoes, sausage, bacon, toast, orange juice, rye & white bread, tea or coffee, french toast, chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes. All for $10. Seniors $8. They also have a flag burning ceremony on Flag Day. Here's two pictures from Flag Day when they burn all old/used flags."

"Elk Lodge in Union NJ provided the perfect venue for our church event hosting over 100 guests. The spaciousness of the lodge accommodated everyone comfortably. The food was delicious, the DJ kept the energy high, and having a cash bar added to the festivities. The staff was attentive and ensured everything ran smoothly. Highly recommend Elk Lodge for any large gatherings!"

"I am just going to say it like this the hall is a very nice size to have any type of event at the outside is a nice establishment too. But what I will say if you are of the African-American extinct I would not advise you to rent this here place for any affair that you would like to have. Due to the experience that I had on my wedding reception July 20th 2024 there are several things that we was promised that we were supposed to get during the reception, and the gentleman that we had a contract with did not have no problem when we asked for our deposit to try to say that we left the establishment unclean due to the fact myself and guess and family members clean this place up after the fact. He was intoxicated slurring at me cussing at me and also let me know that he do not really like renting to you people but he do not mind taking our money. So at that time I took out my camera and video the place that we left it there was a couple artificial rose petals on the floor which we made our contract in January we asked him with the carpet be shampooed cuz the carpet was so damn nasty he said yes. But he was complaining about a couple of rose petals and some balloons left on the floor which I asked him for a broom dustpan or a vacuum cleaner he says to me I was supposed to bring my own who in the hell bring their own tools to a wedding reception to clean up with. And just to let you know the great part of it was I had rented a loveseat some tablecloths when the party store came the next day to pick him up they would not let him in my affair was on a Saturday they did not receive their merchandise back into that Thursday and out of that merchandise deal with several tablecloths missing. A whole entire bag that I had to end up paying for after I had already paid for the rental. So I'm just sending you a few words to let you know think twice before you rent this place. I have pictures I have videos but I will not post them at this time and I have my reason why . And just to let you know we have put $200 down for open bar and we were supposed to pay the difference on the reception he would not even open up the bar for us we did not get our bar service no open bar plus kept the $200 for that ride along with the $400 deposit and don't forget there was items missing when the party place came to pick up the love cheer and tablecloths. He acted so ugly that we had to call the cops thank God most of the guests was gone but there still was a couple there that was cleaning up. My brother-in-law cleaned the kitchen better than what it was before we came up in that establishment. Oh I didn't mention the big kicker that was so embarrassing one of my guests had to go out and get bottle sodas and water now that was super embarrassing as a bride to have to experience. Feel free to share my review."

"Not have your party at this venue. All they do is take your money and find excuses not to give you your deposit back this place kept my $300 because of a cake spot on the carpet I clean from top to bottom before I left I even bring all the garbage out and everything and they still hold my deposit for one spot on the floor."

Flag Day.

Long before it was a national observance, the Order set aside June 14th to honor the flag. Patriotism has always been one of our cardinal principles, and every lodge meeting still closes the same way it has for over a century.
